The Heritage of 8 Norwich Road
Before Barwoods, there was the Duke of York.
The pub has been part of life in Ditchingham since at least 1845, when the Duke of York was recorded in White’s Directory, with John West as its landlord.
In those days, Ditchingham was a busy working village, surrounded by farming, industry and the nearby maltings. The pub was a natural meeting place for the local community. A tradition we’re proud to continue today.
During the Second World War, the nearby Ditchingham Maltings became a USAAF storage and logistics depot, bringing American servicemen into the village between 1943 and 1945. The Duke of York became part of that wartime story too.
Over the years, the pub changed, eventually becoming Smokey Joe’s, before entering its latest chapter as Barwoods.
We’ve given the place a new name, a new look and a new lease of life, but the idea remains the same.
Good food, good drinks, good company, and a place for people to come together.
